Death of Rashan Charles in Hackney
The MetBPA would like to express our condolences to the family of Rashan Charles.
The death of Rashan Charles in Hackney following his detention by Police Officers on Saturday 22nd July has been brought to our attention. We are aware of the CCTV footage which has been widely shared across social media and the resulting tensions within our communities.
We have been in discussion with the Borough Commander of Hackney and senior leaders within the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) regarding this incident. To assist with concerns voiced by our communities, we will continue to work with the MPS to ensure that there is transparency and effective communication provided to our communities.
As with all deaths, either during or following police contact, this incident has been passed to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) for investigation. The IPCC will be conducting an investigation into the events leading up to and following the incident.
Whilst we acknowledge that such events will naturally generate much heated debate, we would appeal for our communities to be patient and allow for the official findings of the IPCC investigation to be announced. We will be monitoring events and keeping our communities informed.
