Police abusing their stop and search powers says NBPA

The National Black Police Association (NBPA) has accused officers of abusing their powers after statistics show black people are six times more likely to be stopped and searched than white people.

Figures published by the Home Office last Thursday (October 27) revealed that although there is a reduction in stop and searches forces are still using the power disproportionately with black and minority ethnic (BME) people.

They showed that people from BME backgrounds are four times more likely to be stopped and searched than those from a white background. Black people alone are six times more likely to be stopped than white people.

In a statement, the NBPA said that this is a “clearly unacceptable abuse of police powers” and “it is not sufficient” to say the reason behind these statistics is down to the high numbers of BME people living in London where 40 per cent of all stop and searches occur.  Read More
