The MetBPA welcomes the announcement from the Home Secretary on the reforms for stop and search

The MetBPA Chair Janet Hills said “The MetBPA have campaigned long and hard for the issue of disproportionality in the use of stop and search to be recognised. This is a step in the right direction and the MetBPA is fully supportive of it.

The report highlighted that a quarter of searches were illegal and takes into account the use of traffic stops. The Home Secretary highlighted that the use of stop and search has impacted in the black community of London.

Mrs Hill added” these new guidelines presents an opportunity for police managers to ensure that their officers are using stop and search powers in a targeted and intelligence lead approach. Managers must hold to account those officers who abuse the powers or who operate outside the code of conduct”.
