In conjunction with Black Poppy Rose, we are holding a Remembrance service for the African, Caribbean and Pacific Islanders who contributed to WWI. A pop-up exhibition entitled The Empire Needs Men highlighting some of the people and events that occurred pre- and post-First World War and explain how they are all interlinked and relevant.
From 10.30am – 12.30pm, The Empire Needs Men pop-up exhibition will be on display, highlighting the contributions of Black servicemen with a focus on the Battle of the Somme and the Africans who contributed.
A one minute silence will take place at 11am, followed by a discussion.
From 6.00pm – 9.00pm, we will be joined by West Indian Association Personnel (WASP) to parade the West Indian Regiment Standard and invite the community for an event that will include film, talks and poetry performance.
6.30pm – 7.00pm: A short play entitled Bita Kuyaa Somme by Narrative Eye
7.00pm – 8.00pm: We WILL Remember…a presentation by Black Poppy Rose
8.00pm – 9.00pm: A panel of speakers including Black History Walks, African Heritage Education Centre, Slavery Remembrance, Patrick Vernon, Commonwealth Evaluators.
