This year marks 100 years of women in policing and in celebration of International Women’s Month the Community Ambassador Programme in partnership with the MetBPA is delighted to invite you to the “iCAN: Look How Far We Have Come” Discovery Evening on Thursday 26th March 2015 between 6:00pm – 8:30pm at Empress State Building, London.
Things have changed dramatically in the hundred years since women took the first tentative steps in to a male dominated workforce, created their stamp and made the police service what it is today.
The iCAN: Look How Far We Have Come Discovery Evening will bring together women from across the MPS who will share their journey, and insights into a career in the organisation from a gender perspective. Speakers on the night include Assistant Commissioner Helen King (Territorial Policing); Chief Superintendent Sue Williams (Redbridge); Janet Hills, Chair MetBPA, Superintendent Robyn Williams (Deputy Director, Training); Clare Davies (Deputy Director HR (Strategic) MPS and others, who will share their views and experiences through a mixture of bite size presentations and case studies to highlight the rich heritage, contribution and change that women have made in the MPS.
It’s fair to say that female police have quietly held two fingers up to the comment made by a Scotland Yard official in 1916 when asked if women would ever be employed as police constables – “No, not even if the war lasts fifty years” was the answer. It’s great to know that women police have proved this comment wrong a million times over and helped to shape the police force over the last hundred years, into the present and on into the future.

While much progress has been made in closing the gender gap in the MPS, it’s important to remember that the history of women in the Metropolitan Police is long and distinguished. The iCAN: Look How Far We Have Come Discovery Evening provides an excellent opportunity to:

Honouring Sophia Stanley through to Sislin Fay, the first black female police officer in 1960 right up to Cressida Dick, the first female Assistant Commissioner at Scotland Yard in 2009; we must not lost sight of the fact that the forward march towards equality and acceptance has been beset by hardship, but also perseverance and strength.
2019 will mark the 100 years since the first female police officer was hired by the Met but we don’t need to wait until then to celebrate the accomplishment of every female officer that’s ever protected our streets, our homes and our people. Here’s to celebrating, showcasing and honouring these role models each and every day.
